On Feb. 9, 2001, The US nuclear submarine Greeneville struck the Japanese fishing boat, Ehime Maru, near Oahu with 35 people on board including 13 students. The boat sank in 5 minutes and nine people were missing. The monument features nine black granite blocks which support the one-ton anchor retrieved from the sunken Ehime Maru, with nine links of its chain still attached.
