Laie Area
In 1865 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased 6,000 acre plantation in Laie. The site for the Temple was on an 11-acre section of that plantation, on top of a gentle rise. Constructed of crushed volcanic rock and coral and surrounded by beautiful formal gardens, the Temple was dedicated on November 27, 1919. It is the first Temple
outside of the continental United States. The Temple stands as a monument of faith to the Polynesian people.
The on-site Visitors Center featurea a ten-foot marble replica of Thorvaldsen's famous Christus. Guided tours explain the basic beliefs of the Church through videos and exhibits.
Directions:
Take H1 West bound to Likelike Highway. Take Likelike Highway through the mountains. Then take Kahekili Highway North all the way to Laie. Turn left at the "Mormon Temple"
sign onto Halelaa Boulevard. The Visitors' Center is straight ahead.
