The Japanese shared much in common with thousands of other immigrants who came to Hawaii. All possessed the courage to leave the comfort of their homes to make a better life for themselves and their families. The Center chronicles their travels from Japan in 1868, through their lives on the plantations of Hawaii, through WWII, and finally, to their economic and political struggles for the freedom they now experience today.
The history of the Japanese people in Hawaii, from immigration to the present, is depicted in photographs and artifacts in the Historical Gallery located on the grounds of the Japanese Cultural Center.
Directions:
From Waikiki: Take McCully Street out of Waikiki toward the mountain. Turn Right onto King Street. Get into the right lane and after the grocery store, make a U-turn type turn onto Beratania Steet. The Japanese Cultural Center will be on your right.
