Ka'anapali Beach

The biggest highlight of Ka'anapali beach is the beach itself. It actually begins at Hanaka'o'o (Canoe beach) and ends 3 miles up the coast at the Honokowai beach park.

In recent years the northern portion of Ka'anapali beach, the stretch north of Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a), has become known as Airport Beach. It is one of the last undeveloped stretches of shoreline in West Maui.

In ancient times the Ka'anapali area was heavily cultivated, Black Rock was known as a leina a ka 'uhane, or "soul's leap", a place where the soul of the dead would leap to the gods.

In more recent times the area around Black Rock was a staging area for the transport of raw sugar. Ruins of the abandoned landing are at the north end of Black Rock. Much has been removed, but some of the earth works can still be seen. During the pre-World War II era, the US Pacific Fleet had their seaplanes anchored off the beach. Had it not been for the creation of Pearl Harbor, the Pacific Fleet would have been anchored off Lahaina and Mala wharf on December 7th, 1941.

There is excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. If you are a snorkeler and would like to learn to dive you can get certified nearby and do your first scuba dive at Black Rock. You will also find good body surfing at the southern end of the beach, near the Hyatt Regency. A visitor to the beach can also wind surf, parasail and jet ski, among other things.

At the north end of Ka'anapali Beach is Black Rock also called Pu'u Keka'a. It is a very nice place to snorkel and reasonably sheltered even during the winter. The fish are somewhat tame, many will come right up to you and 'get in your face'. At the south end, near the Hyatt Regency is another coral formation. These are primarily the best snorkeling places off the beach.

Occasionally, especially during the winter, there can be a very bad shore break. There have been accidents at this location when people are inattentive and 'turn their back on the ocean'. If it looks too rough, it probably is. There are life guards, but the beach is big. If the "Red" flags are out, be careful of the surf.

There are the best of facilities along this beach. Restrooms and showers are located all over Ka'anapali Beach, most are from the resorts, but are open to the public. There are plenty of stores and eating establishments in the area too. In fact, this beach has some of the best dining on the Maui. There are also a lot of activities available and rental shops for the renting of beach gear of all types.
