A
great way to start your visit to the park is at the Kilauea
Visitors Center. Open daily, year-round, from 7:45 am
until 5:00pm, you can learn a lot about the park from the Rangers
and exhibits located inside the center. You can even sit
down for a 30 minute film (on the hour, 9am-4pm only) that will
introduce you to the park. Scheduled ranger walks take
place throughout the day, and you can usually find the list
posted by 9:30-10:00am.
If you're wondering while you're
at the center, "Where exactly IS the volcano?" Well, you're
actually ON it. The thick forest outside hides the views
of Kilauea's summit, but a short five minute walk to the nearby
overlook (behind the Volcano House, in the picture above) will
convince you that you are in fact on a very active volcano.
In fact, the worlds MOST active volcano. You'll get another
chance to view the caldera as you drive along the Crater Rim
Drive... so let's head on to spot number 2 on our journey.
